Pantry of Angels – 2014 Summary

Located at the Presho United Methodist Church

Pantry of Angels celebrated its 10th anniversary in April of 2014.  Residents of Lindley and Caton are our clients.  The Pantry is open every Thursday (except major holidays) from 4:30 TO 5:30 p.m., serving fresh produce and baked goods.   On the 2nd and 4th weeks of each month, staple foods  are also available.  Nutritional goods from all of the food groups are available to those who come or call for food assistance and, in many cases, delivery.

2014 was yet another year of growth in clientele and food distributed for the Pantry of Angels.  9,252 food bundles were distributed, each being at least a 3 day supply for an individual.  Households served totaled 3,026.   These numbers are up from 7,590 and 2,355, respectively, in 2013.  In 2014, 133 food insecure families with 444 individuals received services, compared to 119 families with 402 individuals in 2013.  Calls for emergency food were received 31 times, comprising 170 individuals, versus 22 families with 78 individuals in 2013. (Non-residents are then referred to their local service agencies for ongoing  support.)

In May, Pantry of Angels received a very coveted award.  Each year, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier recognizes an agency that demonstrates noteworthy performance and compassion in service of the hungry, through its “Member Agency of the Year ” award.  The award winner is an agency, chosen from over 90 agencies in 6 counties, that  is in good standing and exhibits the following:

·         Increase in pounds distributed
·         Increase in people served
·         Active and engaged volunteers
·         Positive interactions with clients
·         Connections with outside groups
·         Commitment to ending hunger in their community
·         Willingness to partner with the Food Bank

This was a great recognition for all the volunteers who work so hard to help those less fortunate in our community.  Many hours are spent each week collecting the food products, displaying them for the distribution, packing for and delivering to those unable to attend, restocking and inventorying items not used and cleaning up after the distribution.  Our volunteers are awesome!

God has truly blessed us with all the tangible and intangible components needed to maintain and grow this mission.  He continues to watch over us and hold each hand as we strive to serve Him and fulfill this need in our community.
